Lime Mortar Work

lime mortar

Lime Mortar is a bonding material for brick and stone used as an alternative to modern cement based mortars.

It has been used since the fourth century BC (by the Romans and Greeks) and is nowadays usually used on restoration projects, on buildings of historical interest and where new builds are designed to sympathise with existing buildings.

Lime mortar sets slowly and therefore can be worked for longer than cement based mortar. When set it ‘moves’ with the surrounding stone, reducing damage to masonry if a building is subject to any degree of subsidence.
